Baby Formula Recalled Nationwide Amid Link to Rare, Potentially Fatal Illness
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Federal and state health officials are investigating multiple cases of infant botulism possibly connected to baby formula now under a nationwide recall.
The FDA announced that ByHeart Inc. has agreed to recall two lots of its Whole Nutrition Infant Formula after 13 infants across 10 states were hospitalized with the rare but potentially deadly illness.
The affected lot numbers are 206VABP/251261P2 and 206VABP/251131P2.
Cases have been reported in Arizona, California, Illinois, Minnesota, New Jersey, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Texas, and Washington.
No deaths have been reported at this time.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the recalled formula made up about 1% of all baby formula sales nationwide and was sold both online and through major retailers.
Health officials urge anyone who purchased the recalled formula to check the lot number before disposing of or returning the product. Surfaces and items that came into contact with the formula should be thoroughly washed with hot, soapy water or in a dishwasher.
Parents are also advised to seek medical care immediately if their baby shows symptoms such as:
Poor feeding
Difficulty swallowing
Loss of head control
Reduced facial movement or expression

The FDA says it is still investigating how the contamination occurred and whether additional products may be affected.
Infant botulism is caused by Clostridium botulinum, a bacterium that produces dangerous toxins in the intestines. Symptoms can take several weeks to appear, and while rare, the illness can be fatal if not treated promptly.
