Chronic Wasting Disease confirmed in Pulaski County deer, Kentucky’s second wild case

PULASKI COUNTY, Ky. — The Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources has confirmed a new case of Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) in a wild white-tailed deer harvested this hunting season in Pulaski County. This marks the second confirmed case of the disease in a wild deer in the state.

CWD is an always-fatal neurological disease that affects deer, elk, and other members of the deer family. It is caused by abnormal proteins known as prions. There is currently no cure or vaccine, and while there’s no evidence it can spread to humans, wildlife officials advise hunters not to consume meat from deer that test positive or appear sick or malnourished.

Kentucky Fish and Wildlife is urging hunters to assist with monitoring efforts by submitting deer heads for free CWD testing and aging. Hunters will be notified if their deer tests positive. Testing options include:

  • Self-serve CWD sample drop-off sites

  • Mail-in sample kits

Moving forward, updates on this new detection of CWD will be located on the KDFWR - Southeast Region page. Follow it for updates.
