Drunk Driver Crashes Into Christmas Parade Float in Smiths Grove; No Injuries Reported

A frightening situation unfolded in Smiths Grove on Friday evening when a man drove into a Christmas parade float carrying several adults and children. Fortunately, no one was hurt.

According to Smiths Grove Police Chief Jason Franks, the crash happened around 5:30 p.m. near the intersection of South Main Street and Kirby Street, just north of the I-65 interchange. Officers say 65-year-old Jeffrey E. Cannon, of Smiths Grove, slammed into the float shortly before the town’s parade was set to begin.

Police say their investigation quickly revealed that Cannon was under the influence at the time of the crash. He was arrested on the scene and is facing multiple charges, including first-degree wanton endangerment and DUI with aggravating circumstances.

Cannon was taken to the Warren County Regional Jail, where he is being held on a $50,000 cash bond. The incident remains under investigation, but authorities say they are simply grateful the crash didn’t result in any injuries, especially with children on the float.
