Former Trimble County Sheriff Arrested on Sexual Abuse Charge

A former sheriff from Trimble County is facing serious charges after allegedly sexually abusing a woman while on duty earlier this year.

According to court documents, 53-year-old Charles Kelton turned himself in to the Oldham County Jail early Saturday morning, Nov. 1, after a warrant was issued for his arrest.

Investigators say the incident took place on Feb. 21, 2025, inside the Trimble County Attorney’s Office. The warrant states that Kelton, who was in uniform and on duty at the time, admitted to grabbing a woman by the hips and pulling her toward him after she had “physically and verbally” rejected his advances.

Kelton has been charged with first-degree sexual abuse, a felony, as well as official misconduct. He was released later that day on a $5,000 surety bond and placed on home incarceration. He is also prohibited from having any contact with the alleged victim.

Kelton is scheduled to appear in Trimble County District Court on Thursday, Nov. 6.

He had retired from his position as sheriff on July 31, 2025.
