Rifle Rounds Found in Restroom at Jamestown Elementary; Investigation Underway

RUSSELL COUNTY, Ky. — School officials and law enforcement are investigating after two rifle-caliber bullets were discovered Monday morning inside a restroom at Jamestown Elementary School.

According to a letter sent to parents by the Russell County Board of Education, the ammunition was found in a girls’ restroom toilet. A student who spotted the bullets immediately alerted a teacher. Administrators say the student’s quick action allowed them to respond to the situation promptly.

School officials determined the rounds were consistent with rifle ammunition, not handgun ammunition.

With hunting season underway and many local families participating, the district reminded parents to speak with their children about gun safety, proper handling, and secure storage of firearms and ammunition at home. “A simple conversation can prevent situations like this from occurring,” the letter stated.

Officials also encouraged parents to reinforce the importance of students reporting anything unusual or unsafe to a teacher or trusted adult. The district praised the student who reported Monday’s discovery as an example of responsible behavior.

The school emphasized that student and staff safety remains the top priority. Anyone with questions is encouraged to contact Jamestown Elementary or the district office.

The investigation into how the ammunition ended up at the school is ongoing.
