Statement from the Madison County Detention Center Regarding the Death of an Inmate

The Madison County Detention Center has released an official statement addressing recent reports about a lawsuit connected to the death of inmate Johnathan Mansfield.

Current appointed Jailer Larry R. Brock said the center wants to clarify misinformation circulating in the community. According to Brock, the incident involving Mansfield occurred in September 2024, before he was appointed to the position of Jailer.

Former Jailer Steve Tussey resigned at the end of 2024, and Judge Executive Reagan Taylor appointed Brock to serve the remainder of the term beginning January 1, 2025.

“I think it is important to point out that the incident involving Mr. Mansfield occurred in September 2024 and did not occur during my tenure as Jailer,” Brock stated.

He added that the detention center has made “significant strides” over the past 10 months, focusing on staff training, accountability, and the overall care of inmates.

Brock also announced his plans to run for the Jailer position in the 2026 election, emphasizing his commitment to continued improvements within the facility.

He concluded by requesting that the media clarify in their reporting that the lawsuit stems from a 2024 incident, not one that occurred in 2025.

This report was compiled using information gathered from law enforcement statements, official press releases, and publicly available news sources.
