ADAIR COUNTY, Ky. – A former Kentucky teacher has been convicted on multiple charges involving the sexual abuse of an incarcerated teenager but was acquitted on accusations that she attempted to have her husband killed.

Prosecutors say 28-year-old Elena Bardin, a former English teacher, was arrested in April following an investigation into her relationship with a male juvenile at the Adair Juvenile Detention Center.

Investigators launched the case after a March 27 search at the facility uncovered letters and explicit materials believed to have been sent by Bardin. Authorities allege she had illegal sexual contact with the teen and provided him with explicit photos.

Following a two-day trial in September, a jury found Bardin guilty of first-degree sexual abuse, unlawful transaction with a minor, and distribution of obscene material to a minor. She was acquitted on the charge of criminal solicitation to commit murder, which accused her of asking the juvenile to kill her estranged husband.

The jury recommended a total sentence of 14 years in prison, with the terms to be served consecutively. Bardin’s defense attorney has filed a motion requesting a new trial or an acquittal, arguing that inconsistencies in the teen’s testimony affected the outcome.

Bardin is set to be sentenced on November 13. She also remains involved in a separate family court dispute over visitation rights with her 5-year-old child following her husband’s divorce filing.
